Project Alert
Substance Abuse Prevention that's easy to adopt and proven to work
The Allen County Health Department along with the Allen County Intermediate Center and James E. Bazzell Middle School offer a curriculum to assist young teens in making responsible choices in their lives, particularly encouraging them to say "NO" to participating in use of tobacco, drugs, and alcohol.  Sixth graders are introduced to the program and have 11 weeks of training.  Seventh graders recieve a three week booster course to reinforce those lessons taught the previous school year.

A Registered Nurse from the Allen County Health Department facilitates this training.

For more information about this curriculum, please visit Project Alert online.

Photos are of Allen County Intermediate Center's 6th graders participating in Project Alert December 2006.  Facilitator of Project Alert is Carolyn Richey, RN.  Students read information about substance abuse, discuss what they've read, view videos, then act out alternate scenarios for the video ending.  The purpose of this acting is to rehearse with their peers what they would do if they were faced with the decision to use or not to use.
